Community Mosaic Mural: hand-in designs by 1st June. Making day is 26th July

"Summer sun - fun at the Pells"

We want to mark the milestone of 150 years of swimming at the Pells Pool with a community-made mosaic - to be sited permanently in the pool grounds.  We are planning a mosaic-making day at the pool - a creative, collaborative and fun free event!

Stage One come and meet Nicole and Maia, our artists at the pool opening on Saturday 28th May and create a drawing or image that can be included into the mosaic. Drawings, paintings, collages can be left at the pool kiosk by 1st June. We are not asking for children to come up with a design/plan for the whole mosaic panel, just to create images (simple line drawings, colour paintings, collages) suggested by the theme "Summer sun - fun at the Pells". Details from these images (motifs, shapes, colour combinations) will be selected and incorporated into the final design.

Tuesday 26th July is mosaic making day, everyone is welcome to come along and get involved. If you have experience great - if you've never tried it, now's your chance. It's just like doing a jigsaw and you can either pop a few pieces in as you pass by, or stay all afternoon! Design, materials and equipment will be provided, along with support and encouragement, so do book this date in your diary.

EVENTS SO FAR THIS SEASON

Thanks to everyone who took part in the Volunteers' Weekend on Saturday 30th April & Sunday 1st May (11 am to 4 pm)

This weekend was a great success with many volunteers turning up both day and contributing enormously to preparing the pool for opening. Thank to all those who came and helped.

Thanks to everyon who took part in the BIG Splash!

Saturday 28th May

Our official opening was at noon on Saturday 28th May with the Mayor of Lewes and Neptune attending.

In order to mark the fact that this is our 150th Anniversary year, the first 150 people at noon who wish to take part in our traditional BIG SPLASH got free admission.

The BIG SPLASH was a fantastic photo opportunity - with BBC TV, The Argus and the Sussex Express all carrying pics and reports.

All those who took part have their place in history!

Friday 17th June 1pm-3pm: Schools event for parents and children

Ben Ward - Lewes resident and one of the writers of Horrible Histories the first children's TV programme to win a British Comedy Award - will tell us what it's like to write about history, what goes in to creating the show and some horrible stories about what has gone on at the Pells in years gone by.  Ben is one of the leading children's comedy writers in the UK. He is one of the writers responsible for Tracy Beaker returns (BBC1), Horrible Histories (BBC1), The Basil Brush Show (BBC1), MI High (BBC1) and many others.

More importantly Ben is a two-time European Champion and the current World Champion at the Traditional Sussex Sport of "Toad in the Hole".  Surprisingly few people understand just how impressive that is. There will also be a raffle with signed copies of books by Michael Morpurgo former Children's Laureate and author of The War Horse, as prizes

On this day there will be an official cake cutting ceremony and an opportunity to inspect the 'Pells Springwater Timeline' running along the flint wall and learn how the springs that supply water to the pool and lake have been a significant feature since the Bronze Age.

Fiona Marsden, committee member and local historian has been researching the history of the Pells site and pools. Did you know there used to be two? An online version of the timeline is available on the Springwater Timeline on these webpages.

Saturday 18th June:  7.00pm for 7.30pm: 150th Birthday Party

Sun 19th June: 10.30am - noon:  Paddock Singers

Led by John Hancorn Music Director of the East Sussex Bach Choir and The Baroque Collective, the Paddock Singers performed choral music and popular songs evoking our opening date (1861) and other eras when older Pells Pool supporters would have been child swimmers.

This event was free to OAP (others also most welcome); PPCA provided tea and scones and were delighted that long standing friends and fans were involved in our birthday, even if swimming at the Pells Pool is no longer something they may fancy.

Monday 20th June: 10.30 am - 11.30 am: Pells Paddlers

The Pells Paddlers, who meet regularly at the Pool, will held a special birthday party, with live animals to be handled.
